Refreshing Fall Fig cocktail
A delicious gin based fig cocktail with homemade fig syrup
A sweet and fragrant fig syrup gin cocktail is a delicious cocktail you must enjoy during fall. Cosy up by the fire and savour a perfect gin tonic made with fig syrup and fresh rosemary. It's really easy to make and tastes fantastic.
This easy gin tonic recipe is made with fig syrup, a homemade deliciousness that takes just 20 minutes to make. You use a little for this recipe, then you store the rest of the fig syrup in the fridge for future use. The best part? It lasts for up to a month, so you can use it for many fig syrup gin tonics in the future as well.
The sweet and fruity flavour of fig is beautifully complemented by the fresh herbal rosemary. As with most of my gin-based recipes, I use Tarquins Gin but you can pick your favourite.
Easy fig cocktail
You know fall is here when you see fresh figs in your local shop. They are so versatile and delicious. They are so good in a gin tonic, making the perfect fig cocktail, especially when used as a syrup. We're still using fresh figs to decorate and add taste and top up with a sprig of rosemary because fig and rosemary are two best friends and really complement each other in taste.
For this fig cocktail, we're going to make fresh fig syrup and add it to the recipe. It's really simple and you can store the fig syrup for later use. Fig syrup is so versatile you can add it to lemonades, soft drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails and make a variety of boozy beverages as well. It's really great!
Fig syrup recipe
First of all, we'll need to prepare the fig syrup as it is the star ingredient of our fig cocktail recipe. The fig syrup takes just 4 ingredients and 20 minutes to make.
Gather around a cup of water, a cup of sugar and 2 figs. You can add more figs if you want it sweeter and stronger in taste. Have 2 sprigs of rosemary handy as well.
Bring the water to a boil then add the sugar. Stir until dissolved and add the figs. Simmer for 15 minutes on low heat. Add the sprigs of rosemary and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Let it cool slightly and strain the liquid. Store it in an air-tight container and keep it in the fridge for up to a month. That's it. You know have fig syrup.
Fig cocktail recipe
It's time to make the fig cocktail. Again, you won't believe how easy it is and the result is so delicious it's worth it!
Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Add 1.5 fl oz / 40 ml gin, 1.5 fl oz / 40 ml fig syrup and a squeeze of lemon juice. Top up with refreshing tonic water. I use Fever-Tree light because I prefer my gin tonic with fewer calories.
Now decorate the fig cocktail with a couple of slices of fresh fig and a rosemary sprig. Serve immediately and enjoy. Cheers! I know it's delicious!
Tips for making the best fig cocktail
Choose your gin - I recently went on a trip to Cornwall in England and decided to try the local Tarquins gin. I really loved it so I wanted to try it in different cocktails. Turns out, Tarquins was made for this fig cocktail. Of course, you can use any gin you like or have at home.
Use fresh lemon juice - I love the fragrance of lemons and you all know that fresh lemon juice is the best for any cocktail recipe. You only need a quick squeeze for this cocktail, just to add a bit of tart.
Only Fresh figs - Fresh figs are a must for the syrup and for the decoration of the cocktail. I cannot stress this enough. Don't attempt any of this with dried figs as it won't work. You can make enough fig syrup to last you a while, so please, please use fresh figs.
Good quality tonic water - The slogan for fever tree tonic is “If ¾ of your drink is the mixer, mix with the best” so do exactly that. I'm not saying fever tree tonic is the best, but you should get a good brand that actually enhances your fig cocktail. I always say to go with a light version because you really don't need that extra sugar and calories.
