Delicious Vegan Tuna
A super easy recipe for the best ever vegan tuna chunks, baked in the oven with sliced lemons
This vegan tuna is so delicious, very easy to make and, of course, plant-based. It has a similar taste to that of a baked tuna steak and works so well in a sandwich or as a tuna steak served with chips on the side.
As vegans, we can now enjoy almost everything and vegan tuna is no exception. Are you excited? You should be because this is life-changing. This vegan tuna tastes much like a pan sheet tuna steak and the texture is so akin to the real thing. The texture reminded us of canned tuna, which was so great!
The base of this recipe is actually banana blossom. We've already played with banana blossoms before and made some of the best ever banana blossom fish ever. Since the consistency was so similar to that of tuna, we immediately thought of marinating and baking the blossoms to create vegan tuna. And it worked so well! If you ever missed opening a can of tuna for consistency, then you are going to love vegan tuna made with banana blossom.
What's even better is that banana blossom is so cheap to buy from almost any local supermarket. It's less than £1.50 (around 2USD) for a can and that feeds 4 people! Seriously, add lemon juice, garlic, chives and some chopped nori and you've got yourself some amazing chunks of vegan tuna! Yum!
You can eat this vegan tuna as a steak, alongside your favourite sauce and some delicious chips. I'm already in heaven!
Vegan Tuna Ingredients
With just a handful of ingredients, our vegan tuna is not just delicious but affordable too. All you need is one can of banana blossom and a few pantry staples and you've got yourself a meal for 4 people! What's more is that it's filling, delicious and super healthy. Let me tell you what you buy for this vegan tuna.
Canned banana blossoms - Banana blossoms are the purple flower also called the banana heart from the banana tree. The petals are fleshy and have a similar consistency to artichokes. I buy my banana blossom in a can. It's cheap, does the job so well and has the right consistency for tuna.
Nori sheets - Tastes just like the sea so it's an ideal ingredient for marinating the vegan tuna. This will give it a fishier taste.
Lemon Juice - Lemon juice gives it that extra tang you expect when eating fish. I love adding it to all my vegan fish recipes.
One lemon - Slice the lemon and bake the vegan tuna with these slices. The aroma will penetrate the banana blossom and become tangier and more flavoursome. Yum!
Garlic powder - Garlic just makes everything taste so much better. Especially when mixed with lemon.
Chives - Not your ordinary herb here, but I love chives because it adds an earthy, onion flavour profile to the tuna.
Salt and Pepper - Go for sea salt and freshly ground peppercorn. Always a joy in any fishy dish.
How to make Vegan Tuna
Such a quick and easy recipe! Let's see how to make this vegan tuna, step by step.
Drain the can of banana blossom and using your hands squeeze any excess water from each banana blossom chunk. Be careful to not break the chunks.
In an air-tight container mix the lemon juice, garlic powder, chives, salt and pepper and ground nori sheet. Add the banana blossom chunks. Close the lid, carefully shake a few times and leave it to marinate for about 20 minutes (or overnight if you prefer).

Storing the Vegan Tuna
Leftovers can be kept in the fridge in an air-tight container. We recommend eating it within 2-3 days. Of course, when it's fresh out of the oven it tastes best.
It can be used for meal prep if you like to do that at the beginning of the week.
