Tempeh Bacon
How to make a delicious vegan bacon by using tempeh. Our tempeh bacon is smoky, salty and super tasty and works with a vegan BLT.
Our homemade tempeh bacon is a perfect vegan dish which tastes just like the real thing. Vegan bacon seems super complicated to make, but it's in fact super easy and takes just a handful of simple ingredients from your local shop.
Making vegan bacon from tempeh is great when you just transition to a vegan diet or simply miss the crunchy texture of bacon for breakfast. It's about having a vegan breakfast as a sandwich or quick BLT for when you are in a rush.
Our tempeh bacon is super tasty thanks to its smoky and salty flavours. Use it in salads or in a sandwich. Tempeh is made from soybeans so you will have a full protein intake for breakfast. This means more energy for the day ahead.
You probably know we love making vegan meats as we've prepared vegan steaks, vegan sausages, vegan chicken and even vegan scallops.
We offer two options on how to cook the vegan bacon from tempeh: fry or bake.
If you want a more decadent version, fry it as you will get crispier vegan bacon, a lot more similar in taste to the real thing.
If you want a healthier option, then we recommend baking the tempeh bacon in the oven. This way there no oil added to the ingredients list so you can enjoy an oil-free dish. It's healthier for your arteries.
How to make tempeh bacon – Step by step
Step 1 - Mix the marinade ingredients in a bowl until well combined.
Step 2 - Make sure to stir the ingredients well until the sugar is fully dissolved. This is important because otherwise the marinade will not develop its full flavour profile and you will end up with granulated sugar on your tempeh. It won't tastes as good.
Step 3 - Slice the tempeh as thin as you like but make sure it doesn't fall apart.
Step 4 - Marinade the tempeh slices for 20 minutes. You can also marinade it overnight, in the fridge.
Step 5(a) - If you bake the tempeh, preheat the oven to 200C/395F. Place the tempeh slices on a baking sheet and bake in the centre of the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy around the edges.
Step 5(b) - If you fry the tempeh, heat a little olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the slices and fry for around 2 minutes on each side until the edges become crispy and golden brown.
Step 6 - Serve immediately in a salad or BLT sandwich.
What is tempeh bacon?
Tempeh bacon is our own version of vegan substitute for "real" bacon. Tempeh is a great source of protein, cruelty-free. Our tempeh bacon does not use any sort of animal product, being fully vegan and low in fat.
To make it taste similar to the real thing, we use soy sauce for the saltiness and liquid salt for the smokey aroma. To make the marinade stick better to the tempeh, we add a little brown sugar. The sugar also gives the marinade a sweet flavour so it's even more delicious.
How long does the tempeh bacon keep?
We recommend consuming the tempeh bacon immediately, fresh from the oven/frying pan. However, we used the leftovers for up one week before. As a tip, I recommend freezing the plain tempeh and defrosting it to use for vegan bacon when you are ready to eat it instead.
This way you will enjoy fresher breakfasts.
How to serve tempeh bacon
Tempeh bacon is delicious on its own but we recommend serving it in a salad (like vegan Caesar salad) or in a sandwich. The point of this dish is that it replicated real bacon so you can use it the same way as you would otherwise.
