Jackfruit Pulled Pork Sandwich
A delicious vegan jackfruit sandwich intended to satisfy your appetite for pulled pork. It's easy to make, tastes like BBQ delights and it's super satisfying.
You love the taste of BBQ in a slow-cooked pulled pork. After lots of experiments in the kitchen, I'm pleased to tell you that as vegans, we can now have the best ever jackfruit pulled pork sandwich. Think that rich taste of the BBQ with the flavours of the pulled pork, the right consistency where you actually bite and enjoy. Topped with melted vegan cheese and crunchy radish, this divine jackfruit sandwich is your new go-to lunch. It's quick and easy to put together and thanks to the fact that you're using jackfruit, you don't need to actually slow-cook anything to obtain that melts-in-the-mouth consistency with your jackfruit.
The secret to the perfect jackfruit
I know you are wondering how can you possibly make jackfruit taste the same as pulled pork. It's possible, really! Not only it looks the same (which I think is great) but the consistency is so similar. With the taste, many non-vegans told me they can't tell the difference. This is important because you can now convince your relative to eat this jackfruit and slowly become beginner vegans.
So what is the secret to the perfect jackfruit? Squeezing the water out of the jackfruit. Place it in a cheesecloth and twist and squeeze and twist and squeeze. Do that until you feel your arms really working there. That's it! From now onwards you can use jackfruit for everything you want. I made a jackfruit casserole not long ago by using the same squeeze method and it was perfect.
How to make the perfect jackfruit pulled pork sandwich
Now that you know how to use jackfruit properly, you need to make it taste exceptional. And for that, we need rich red wine mixed with an espresso. You read it right, coffee will create that incredible rich taste you want when you bite into a pulled pork sandwich. That's the trick to creating the perfect taste. Add some soy sauce to make it salty and you have the perfect recipe for success, right there.
To make it flavoursome, we'll add onion, garlic, some tomato paste, shiitake mushrooms (hello umami flavour!) and a carrot for texture. To give it a herbal profile, add a little thyme and rosemary. We're simmering this at low temperature for 15 minutes or so and then we add it to soft hot dog buns.
To really impress your family and friends, add a slice of vegan cheese over your jackfruit and oven bake the sandwich for 5 minutes until the cheese melts. Add some fresh radish slices for extra crunch and decorate with fresh green herbs (like parsley or oregano).
Serve it with delicious and healthy polenta chips or plantain fries (extra yum, I promise!).
This is now our favourite go-to lunch. Store in an air-tight container and re-heat your leftovers in the oven. Ideally, you'll consume this jackfruit delight fresh.
