Ginger Syrup
A sweet and spicy warming ginger syrup ideal for cocktails and mocktails
Ginger syrup is a delicious sweet and warming addition to your cocktails or mocktails. It has a delicious kick and it requires just 3 ingredients and a saucepan. It's very fast to make and keeps well in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks.
Ginger syrup is so easy to make and the result is a sweet spiced syrup that's warming and delicious. It's perfect for cocktails and mocktails and you should make it in advance, then store it in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Add it to your gin tonic or margaritas.
Ginger syrup is one of my favourite simple syrups because you give so much flavour to your drinks. Besides, it can be used for an array of other things like waffles, pancakes and marinades. It's so simple yet packed with flavour, you are going to love it.
What's Ginger Syrup
Ginger syrup is a simple syrup infused with fresh ginger. Simple syrup is just equal parts of sugar and water that are boiled until the sugar dissolves. Many cocktails or mocktails ask for simple syrup as part of the recipe. Ginger adds that warming kick to your otherwise sweet simple syrup.
Almost all simple syrups can be enhanced by adding a third ingredient. For the ginger syrup, you need sugar, water and ginger. By simmering the ginger in the sugary water you create a perfect ginger tasting syrup that is potent and so delicious.
Ginger syrup works very well with a particular cocktail I love so much called El Diablo. It's our mocktail version of the Mexican classic which is more of a Dulce Diablo because it's sweet and spicy with an amazing fizzy kick thanks to the ginger syrup addition.
Ingredients Ginger Syrup
The Ginger Syrup requires just three ingredients and a saucepan.
1 cup of water
1 cup sugar
4 oz fresh ginger
These ingredients will yield 1 ΒΌ of Ginger Syrup. You can simply double or triple the ingredients for larger batches.
How To Make Ginger Syrup
It's so easy you won't believe it. Just note that the ginger syrup is quite potent. It's not just gently flavoured but actually has a deep taste of ginger. It's also ideal for teas if you want a ginger tea with lemon in the winter. Seriously delicious.
Step 1: In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar and ginger and bring to a boil.
Step 2: Stir to make sure all the sugar has dissolved.
Step 3: Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes on low heat.
Step 4: Strain the syrup to remove all solids and allow the syrup to cool completely before use. You can now pour it into a jar or a glass bottle, whichever you prefer.
I like to keep my syrup in a small bottle for easier use. You can absolutely use a jar if you prefer.
Most drinks in which I use this delicious cocktail will require 30 ml of syrup or 1 oz. Your one batch will be enough for around 8-9 cocktails.
How To Store
Simple syrups can last for days in the fridge. Keep refrigerated in an air-tight container for up to 2-3 weeks. You want to use it within the next few days as fresh is always best. Shake it from time to time and check for signs of mould.
How To Use
The best use case for Ginger Syrup is cocktails or mocktails. I love using it in a variety of beverages.
Do try it on pancakes and waffles too. It really works so well, it's amazing.
For mocktails, I like using this syrup in combination with a tequila flavoured non-alcoholic spirit. You can also try it with lemon tea or fresh orange juice. Great combination.
It can work like a charm for marinades or sweet-spicy sauces.
I love it when mixed with fizzy ginger beer. It's so good!
That's it, you are now ready to make the world's easiest and most delicious Ginger Syrup. I can't wait for you to tell me what recipes you are adding it to.
