Easy Vegan Croutons
Homemade vegan croutons are quintessential for a variety of dishes, especially when you plan on cooking amazing Italian dishes. I know many of you buy them from the store, but once you see how easy they are to make, you won't ever spend money on them. What great about croutons is that you can make them every single time you have some leftover stale bread so you never have to waste food.
Besides, these easy vegan croutons last for up to 5 days in an air-tight container so you will never run out of them when you need them for soups or salads.
To make authentic vegan croutons I wanted to go down the Italian route. I wanted to mix aromatic garlic with the gorgeous flavours of Italian herbs. That's the perfect combination in my opinion. Besides, they really add so much taste to soups and salads.
This recipe takes very little time and you can do it while you are making your main course. Or, you can make it on the weekend in preparation for all the awesome weekly dishes that call for croutons.
How to make Vegan Croutons
You won't believe how easy they are to make! First, start by preheating your oven. 400F or 200C.
Slice up your loaf. I normally end up creating 1 inch (2.5 cm) cubes. You can make them smaller or larger, it's up to you and your preference.
Line a baking sheet with baking paper and add your cubes to the tray. Now it's time to drizzle with olive oil, add the Italian herbs, the garlic powder and the salt and pepper.
With your clean hands, toss the bread cubes to ensure the condiments and herbs are evenly distributed. Feel free to taste one cube and see if you want to add more oil, salt, pepper, garlic or Italian herbs.
If you want, you can even add a little bit of vegan cheese to make these croutons cheesy. This is entirely optional but I like to give you ideas so you can create the best ever homemade vegan croutons for yourself.
Bake these babies in the centre of the oven for 5 minutes. Check them and see if they are crunchy enough for your liking. Turn them around and bake them for another 3-5 minutes.
Let them cool at room temperature if using later or add them to your dish right away. If you want you can store them in an air-tight container for up to 5 days.
