How to pick the perfect cantaloupe melon
The secret to the perfect cantaloupe salad is picking the right ripe cantaloupe melon. It's easier than you think to pick the right one from your local supermarket. A ripe cantaloupe is juicy and sweet and fills your mouth with a joyful honey-like taste.
You can get a cantaloupe from the market but any supermarket can sell a good melon too! The first thing you need to do to pick up the best ripe cantaloupe is to smell it. You should be able to enjoy a sweet scent the moment you bring it closer to your nose. To put it simply, if you can't smell the melon yet it's not ripe.
However, don't be discouraged if your local supermarket cantaloupe melons don't immediately smell like honey! You can always buy one and leave it on the counter for a few days. You will want to wait for it because it's the juiciness of the cantaloupe that really makes the salad awesome.
We normally buy them on a Monday when we do our shopping for the week and make the cantaloupe salad at the weekend. Just on time for those laid back weekend grills with family and friends.
Did you buy a cantaloupe that already smells perfectly and you can tell it's ripe and fragrant? Place it in the fridge so it keeps a few more days if you are not ready to eat it on the same day. You don't want to leave a ripe cantaloupe on the counter as it will go off and become slightly sour, less juicy and nice.
