Chipotle Margarita
Step by step instructions with pictures on how to make a delicious chipotle margarita
This chipotle margarita is spicy, fizzy and tastes like chilli. Our chipotle margarita is made with a non-alcoholic tequila replacement but it can easily be transformed into a great potent cocktail as well.
If you like spicy ingredients, then you probably like to experiment with chillies and all sorts of spicy things in the kitchen. Cocktails and mocktails are no different and are ideal for practising your level of spice love. Recently, I decided to try chipotle margaritas. My smoky spicy margarita was such a success, I now wanted to try a different beverage, this time non-alcoholic.
My chipotle margarita tastes quite spicy and my husband said it's for advanced spice lovers given that I mix it with tonic water. So the fizz from the tonic, together with the chipotle can get your throat on fire a little. But then, that's the joy of drinking spicy beverages, right?
What is chipotle margarita?
Chipotle margarita is a type of margarita that contains chipotle paste. Let's face it, chillies play a huge part in Mexican cuisine. If you're into heat, then this is the recipe for you. This version of a classic margarita is for a more adventurous palate though.
Chipotle is a smoke-dried ripe jalapeno chilli pepper and it's used for seasoning. The chipotle paste is the smoked and dried jalapenos rehydrated and canned with agave, vinegar, garlic and other spices.
A chipotle margarita is essentially a classic margarita that requires a little chipotle paste as well as some fizzy tonic water. The result is a spicy drink, a little fresh with a hint of sweetness.
Ingredients for chipotle margarita
Chipotle chilli paste - The star ingredient, you can purchase it from any supermarket. You will get an array of great ingredients like dark agave nectar, garlic, balsamic vinegar. You can also use chipotle in adobo sauce if you prefer
Mockingbird spirit - This is your non-alcoholic spirit. Use it to create mocktails as it's a tequila flavour spirit. It's made from blue agave, the same as tequila. If you want a potent drink, use actual tequila or mezcal for this recipe.
Agave Syrup - Use the best you can afford. It's lovely, vegan and tastes soooo good!
Lime Juice - Refreshing and cooling, this is the ingredient that will balance out some of the spice. One juicy lime will be enough for 30 ml lime juice (1 fl oz)
Tonic Water - One small can of light tonic water. I use the light Fever-Tree can in 150 ml (5 fl oz). It's enough for one cocktail.
