Marshmallow Eyes
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
Marshmallow eyes are the ideal Halloween treat for kids. You'll need to buy vegan marshmallows in your local supermarket but luckily they are now easy to find. Buy the big marshmallows and some sugar eyes. Super easy!
All you need to do is dip one side of the sugary eyes in a little water and stick them to the marshmallow. Arrange them on a plate and they are ready to serve. Super quick, super easy and delicious!
Disgusting Sausage Fingers
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 20 minutes
You won't believe how easy this vegan Halloween treat is. You will need to buy vegan frankfurters from your local supermarket. In some countries, you will find them in IKEA. Grab some vegan hot dog buns, ketchup and mustard.
Using a sharp knife, score each frankfurter to create the illusion of a fingernail. Slice a small rectangle at the top of the frankfurter and carefully peel it off.
Boil the frankfurters according to the pack instructions. Add them into the hot dog buns and decorate with ketchup (blood) and mustard (disgusting pus). I mean that's the ultimate Halloween yuck! And yeah, it actually tastes delicious.
Classic vomit Jack
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 40 minutes
Oh who doesn't love to eat gross nachos from a vomiting pumpkin? I mean that's what Halloween is all about. You'll need a carving pumpkin, some purple nachos (purple potato nachos) and some vegan cheese cream. You can see the recipe for the vegan cream cheese here and I actually recommend that you make this one. It's not only delicious but it's perfect for all sorts of Halloween recipes below as well. It has a fun yellow colour and when mixed with a bit of ketchup it can give a gross impression.
On a plate, spread your purple nachos. Carve the little pumpkin in such a way that it looks as if it's being sick. You'll need to remove the top, make it hallow, then cut its eyes and mouth.
Add the vegan cheese sauce in the pumpkin and all over the nachos. Let the Halloween festivities begin.
Spooky Puff Coffins
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 30 minutes
You won't believe how easy these are. You'll need a sheet of vegan puff pastry. To make this super easy for you, I recommend drawing a simple shape of a coffin on a piece of paper and cutting it with scissors. Use the paper as a guide to cut your puff pastry. Each puff pastry should give you around 8-10 coffins so make sure you keep the design quite small.
Once you cut the puff pastry into shapes, score each coffin with a cross to give it more dimension and make it more vampire-like. Brush with a little olive oil and add salt, pepper, herbs if you like and some either grated vegan cheese or some nutritional yeast. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden and puffed.
Gross Cookies Monsters
Level of difficulty: Medium
Time to make: 40 minutes
Who doesn't love vegan cookies? Especially for Halloween when it feels like the best holiday for candy and treats. This recipe requires a bit more skill but don't worry, it's still fun to make.
First and foremost, you'll need to get your ingredients: marshmallows, sugar eyes and cookies. When it comes to the cookies, you can either make your own or buy them from the store. I like to make my own. The recipe for the chocolate cookies is here and I promise they are the best chocolate cookies ever. They are vegan, soft and delicious.
Arrange your cookies on a plate. Place the marshmallow in a microwave for around 10 seconds. Using a spoon (careful it will be hot) place the marshmallow on the cookies and stretch and pull it apart to drape it over your cookies. The marshmallow cools very quickly! If you need more marshmallows, add more to the microwave and repeat the process.
Add the sugary eyes to the marshmallow web and enjoy!
Repulsive Creature Eyes
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
Another easy vegan Halloween treat for you here: the repulsive creature eyes! You'll need just two ingredients which makes this one of my favourite recipes for Halloween. Besides, it really looks horrific and tastes fantastic, so it's a win.
Grab yourself a can of lychees and a bag of frozen blueberries. Thaw a handful of blueberries in a bowl. When ready, grab a lychee, place a blueberry in it and fix it in place with a toothpick. Repeat with all lychees. For added effect, feel free to add a bit of the juice from the thawed blueberries to make the lychee look grosser. Serve in a bowl and voila!
Scary Halloween Spider
Level of difficulty: Medium
Time to make: 120 minutes
One of my favourite vegan Halloween treats: the spooky spider. I love making spiders for Halloween and I recently realised that I can also use black dye to make them look even creepier. I have the recipe for the Halloween Spider Bread here, so make sure to follow all instructions. If you dare, just add a little black food colouring to the dough to make them look scary.
Witches Halloween fingers
Level of difficulty: Medium
Time to make: 120 minutes
If you love making bread for Halloween, I've got another vegan treat for you. You'll need to make your own bread dough and then shape it into gross looking fingers. You can make them as skinny or as fat as you like. I find big fat fingers a lot creepier but I know some people like them skinny to truly remind them of skeletons and witches. Lovely!
To make this Halloween recipe you'll need almonds with their skin still on. Also 500g bread flour, 325 ml water, 7 g yeast, salt, 30 ml olive oil and 1 tsp caster sugar.
Add the lukewarm water to a small bowl. Dissolve the sugar in the water and sprinkle the yeast over the sugary water. Set aside for 10-15 minutes until frothy.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, oil. Add the yeasty water and using a standing kitchen mixer with the hook attachment, knead for 10 minutes. You should now have a smooth and elastic dough.
Proof the dough for 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knock back the dough to release any air.
Now, divide the dough into 12-15. Shape the dough to create a long stick, and place it on a baking sheet. Add the almond to the tip of each finger and press to make sure it stays in place. Light with a little olive oil and sprinkle salt to taste.
Let them proof for another 20 minutes, then bake in the centre of the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden.
Optional: I added a little red colouring to my dough to make the fingers look a bit pink. Disgusting but delicious!
Witches Potions
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
You need to serve drinks for any Halloween party and that's why I recommend making margaritas...with a twist. Simply make a spicy margarita but add half a shot of Curacao to the mix. You'll have a blue potion that tastes incredible and looks awesome.
"Toxic" Marsh Halloween decor
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
This is my favourite decor tip for Halloween. It's so simple and adds so much drama to the table. You will need some champagne flutes, some fresh red sorrel leaves and some green food colouring.
Place the champagne flutes around the table, fill them with water and add a few green colouring drops. Add as much as you need to make the water bright green. Add a few leaves of red sorrel and you've got yourself some "toxic" Halloween plants on the table.
Vampire Blood Shots
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
Another cost-effective way to make your Halloween table look amazing is to get yourself a bottle of red wine and some shoot glasses. Place the shot glasses on a tray decorated with spooky spiders and all sorts of spider web. Add the red wine to the shot glasses and you've got yourself "blood shots". It's an effective way to make the table look more atmospheric and enjoy a shot of wine.
Dead Spirit Floating Candles
Level of difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 10 minutes
Another cheap and simple decor that is super easy and super effective. Get some cocktail glasses and fill them with water. Add some black food colouring and mix well until the water really looks black and gross. Place a table candle on the top. It should float nicely. Now it's grim and atmospheric and you can use spirit candles for your Halloween party.
