Refreshing Basil Smash Cocktail
How to make a refreshing summer basil smash cocktail with gin and low calorie tonic
This basil smash cocktail is a refreshing, low-calorie drink which became our new summer obsession. Much like Aperols, the basil cocktail smash is meant to be served as an aperitif, or purely as a joyful cocktail during those hot summer evenings with friends and family.
The basil smash cocktail is a relatively new type of cocktail. It's fresh and its beautiful green colour makes is really appealing and fun.
Who created the basil smash cocktail
When we said that basil smash cocktails are a new invention, we actually meant it. It was created in Hamburg in 2008 by one Jörg Meyer. This new cocktail became so beloved, it even won The Best New Cocktail awards in 2008 which is a pretty big deal. If you are curious, note that basil smash cocktails can be made using green and red basil.
The red basil smash cocktail will have a pink-purple tint, making it look apparently fruity, until your lips meet the herby-refreshing taste.
The green basil smash cocktail will look green and fresh as you can see in our pictures.
How to make a low-calorie basil smash cocktail
There are many variants of the basil smash cocktail and in all fairness, you will probably have to try a few variations until you find your absolute favourite.
For example, you can muddle the basil and add it to the drink. You can blend the basil with a type of alcohol, then sieve it, so you enjoy an infusion of basil (our preferred way) or you can simply leave fresh basil in your gin tonic so you can enjoy an effervescent, truly refreshing drink. If you pick the latter, note that your drink it will become more like a basil gin tonic, as the word basil smash implied muddling or blending the herb.
Meyer first created the basil smash cocktail with Hendrick’s Gin. We love an authentic gin tonic made with Hendrick's so it is our favourite brand either way. However, if you want something more Mediterranean, modern and fun, we recommend trying the basil mash cocktail with Gin Mare.
To make the low-calorie basil smash cocktail you will need one shot of triple sec, half a cup of fresh basil leaves, two shots of gin and around 6 fl (180 ml) zero tonic water.

Blend the triple sec with the basil in a kitchen blender until everything is well combined. Sieve the mixture and divide into two different cocktail glasses. Add a shot of gin in each glass and top up with 3fl (90ml) of zero tonic water.
How to serve the basil smash cocktail
There are many types of cocktail glasses and we believe that a delicate basil smash cocktail works best in a coupe glass. However, for informational gatherings, you can use an old-fashioned glass.
This cocktail can be served with or without ice. Should you decide to serve it without ice, we recommend using really cold tonic water to ensure the cocktail is refreshing.
