Smoky Spicy Margarita
How to make a delicious summery smoky spicy margarita which is refreshing and fun
Now that's summer here, we like to chill on the balcony with our spicy margaritas. We also love our gin tonic and authentic margaritas, but who doesn't like to mix and match a little? The idea behind my spicy margaritas happened as an accident, like most brilliant recipes. Every cook who reads this knows that some experiments transform into glorious results while others, well, failed trials. But that's ok, because we need to allow our creative freedom and try new things every day (or at least every week).
So spicy margaritas. They happened because I really fancied some spicy food and since my husband is not best friends with the chilies, I thought I'm going to put it on the rim of my margarita glass. And then, I used the smoked salt by mistake. I literally picked the wrong shaker.
So I ended up mixing smoky salt with a little chili powder and the result was a fiery smoked awesomeness in my mouth. My taste buds were dancing with enthusiasm. The only thing I noticed was that my cocktail lacked a dash of sweetness to overcome the otherwise overpowering smoky flavours. So I played with different fresh fruit juices. I tried pineapple, orange juice and mango and a combination of them all. As you can tell, I had much fun creating these spicy margaritas.
But worry not, I tried them the next day also to ensure the end result is actually tasty and not influenced by my margarita goggles. Orange, lime and mango worked best when put together. The margaritas were refreshing, sweet and delicious, with that gorgeous smoke and spice. Perfection in a cocktail glass.
How to make spicy margaritas?
Start with the rim first. On a plate, mix the smoky salt and chili powder. You can control how spicy you want the margaritas. I put 1 tsp of smoky salt and 1/2 tsp of chili powder but that might be a ridiculous amount of chili for some. So start with a pinch, and work your way up from there.Cut a lime wedge. Hold the glass and run the lime's pulp along the outside of the rim until it is covered with juice.
Hold the glass upside down and dip the wet rim into the smoky spicy salt. Press gently and twist it around until your glass rim is evenly coated.
Add ice cubes if using. Now it's time to blend the actual margarita cocktail.
You can use a cocktail shaker or add all ingredients directly into your glass. Use a shot glass as a measuring device. Add 40 ml (4 cl) of silver tequila and 20 ml (2 cl) triple sec. Top up with freshly squeezed lime juice, orange juice and mango juice. Mix all ingredients with a cocktail spoon.
Add a lime slice as decoration and served immediately.
That's it. Super quick and easy to make. To add a few notes as I think these are important.
If you want a super spicy margarita, add a little more chili powder to the smoky salt. To check if it's good, just press your finger onto the mixture and taste it. Adjust the seasoning so you love it. I normally drink my margarita by working my way around the rim of the glass, this is how much I love the combo of smoky salt and spice.
I'd add some ice cubes to this cocktail to make it more refreshing. You can add a little more orange juice for tanginess if you prefer more zest. Again, taste and adjust. This spicy margarita recipe contains the right amount of ingredients for a balanced yet delicious result. But you can always tailor it a little to your own liking.
