Easy and delicious Vegan Steak
No need to skip those fun summer BBQ gatherings anymore. You can now enjoy a delicious Vegan Steak which can be fried or grilled. Either way, this easy vegan steak will taste incredible.
Always wanted to throw a fun BBQ party but didn't know how to make vegan steak? We know the feeling, and that's why we are super excited to bring to you this quick and easy vegan recipe. There is no meat in this, is 100% vegan. We didn't want to create this because we missed meat the taste of meat, but because we wanted the same consistency. Sometimes, it's a lot of fun to eat a tofu burger, but it's even more fun to be able to have Sunday dinner with vegan Yorkshire puddings and veg on the side.
Not only this vegan steak is delicious but it can fool anyone who's looking at it. Every single one of my family and friends thought this is not vegan. However, just because it does look like the real thing, it doesn't mean it can fool anyone. The consistency is similar to that of steak, sure, but the taste is not. Having said that, with the right spices and sauces, this actually has a smokey, slightly tarty flavour, so we promise, everyone will love your vegan steak.
We've been going all in, experimenting with this vegan steak in the last few days. This works fantastic on a plate as the star attraction, or in a sandwich. In the last couple of weeks, we started taking intensive German classes so I've been making us vegan steak sandwiches. If you really want to test your friends, you can make a vegan steak burger and add several layers os salad, tomatoes and onion to a lovely vegan brioche. That's about the only time when your friends might not be able to tell they are not eating a real burger. So that's pretty great.
So how do you achieve that realistic steak look? Well here's the trick. The vegan steak will have a rather firm and stretchy consistency, so every time you try to mould it, it sort of bounces back. I tried using a potato masher to give it shape, but when I'd turn it around a couple of times, all the marks will be almost gone.
So take a cooling rack, put the vegan steak on top of it, and with the potato masher, press onto it. This way, both sides will have their marks at the same time, without it bouncing it back. Do it a couple of times and it will stay this way.
Is there a downside to this vegan steak? Just one, I'm afraid. This is not gluten-free at all. It's made with vital wheat gluten, so this cannot be consumed by those who are gluten intolerant. The vital wheat gluten is super high in protein. If you scroll down to our nutritional label you will see the crazy protein number. So next someone asks you where do you get your protein from as a vegan...give them this recipe.
Can you buy vital wheat gluten? Yes, you can. We buy it from a bio shop right next to us, here in Germany. Ours is from a brand called Veganz. It comes in 250g pouches and I use one pouch in one go. It's about 3 EUR to buy it, but given that I get 4 massive vegan steaks out of it, I'd say that it's really worth the money. So check it out in your local bio shop, or order it on Amazon.
How to make vegan steak?
This is super easy to make. I repeat, this vegan steak is so easy to make, you won't believe it. It only takes 10 minutes (if that) to put together. You'll need a food processor where you'll add the chickpeas, the tomato sauce, the vegetable stock and your spice. Mix this together until you get a slightly thick sauce.
Transfer this to a bowl, then add the vital wheat gluten. Mix with a spoon a little, then start kneading with your hands until well combined. You should have a firm and stretchy texture which you can then mould into a ball and cut into four equal pieces. Move each piece onto the cooling rack and flatten it with the potato masher. Wrap the vegan steak in aluminium foil and steam it for about 20 minutes.
In the meantime, you can do the quick and easy sauce for your vegan steak.
The sauce for the vegan steak is also super easy to do. Simply mix all the ingredients until well combined.
Take your vegan steak from the steamer. Put the steak into the sauce and make sure it's fully covered. If you like your vegan steak smokier, then add more liquid smoke to it. If you like it mild, keep the recipe as it is. And if you want it spicy, you can add some cayenne pepper to the sauce.
Right, you can now fry/grill it right away or you can put it in the freezer for next time.
The taste of vegan steak
So how does this vegan steak taste like? Delicious. But really, this can be up to you as well. If you like a little more smoke to your vegan steak, just add a little more liquid smoke to it. If you want it to be spicy with a subtle smoke like taste, then add smoked paprika to it. For more nuttiness, be more liberal with the nutritional yeast. It really is a fantastic recipe which leaves room for play.
Why you'll like this vegan steak recipe:
- It's quick and easy to make
- It has an incredible texture
- It's full of flavour
- It will be the star attraction for any BBQ
- It has the right herbs and spices
To store your vegan steak, you can let them in the sauce for 1-2 days and make them when you are ready. If you have any leftovers, they keep well in the fridge. We love serving it with a little cloudberry jam on the side.

Description
A delicious and easy to make vegan steak with the right steak-like texture and appearance. This vegan steak can be fried or grilled and served with or without sauces. It tastes juicy and amazing.
Ingredients
Vegan Steak
- 1 cup chickpea
- 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
- 8 wt. oz vital wheat gluten
- 2/3 cups tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup vegetable stock
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp dijon mustard
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 pinch peppercorn
- 1 pinch salt
Vegan Steak Sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 3 tbsp tomato sauce
- 1 tsp liquid smoke*
Instructions
- Add chickpea, nutritional yeast, tomato sauce, vegetable stock, soy sauce, dijon mustard, oregano, paprika, coriander powder, black pepper, salt to the food processor and process until all ingredients are mixed well.
- Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add the vital wheat gluten. Stir in with a wooden spoon, then start kneading with your hands. Knead the dough for a short minute until everything is well mixed together. You'd want to see your dough be firm and stretchy, so make sure you don't over knead. The more you knead your dough, the tougher it will become, so a sweet in-between is best.
- Once you reach the firm and stretchy texture, roll your dough into a ball and cut it into 4 roughly equal-sized pieces. Put each steak on top of a cooling rack and using your hands (or a potato masher) press on the steaks to flatten them. The colling rack and the potato masher will create real steak like streaks on your vegan steak.
- Wrap each steak in aluminium foil. Using a bamboo steamer, steam them for 20 minutes. As the steaks will be quite large, we recommend stacking two bamboo steamer baskets on top of one another. Put two steaks in each bamboo basket.
- While your vegan steaks are steaming, it's time to make the vegan steak sauce. Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix them together. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved. Add more sugar if you want your sauce to be sweeter and add more liquid smoke if you want your sauce to taste meatier.
- Once your steaks have steamed, unwrap the aluminium foil and transfer them to a deep plate. Pour a little sauce over each steak and using a kitchen brush cover all steak in the sauce. Turn the steak around and repeat until fuly covered in sauce.
- To Fry: Heat a non-stick pan with a little olive oil and then fry the steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely brown. Add more sauce to the frying pan and brush the sauce over the steak if you want them to have a deeper flavour and look a little darker.
To Grill: Grill the steaks on the BBQ for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely brown. Add more sauce to the vegan steaks if you like a deeper flavour. - Serve immediately with a side of salad or baked potatoes.
Notes
* Add 1 tablespoon of liquid smoke if you prefer your sauce more steak-tasting. Liquid smoke will give your steak that burnt grill taste you like when you have a summer bbq.

Can you freeze them?
Yes but in my opinion they become a little too tough. Fresh is best!
I have tried one other Vegan Steak recipe with great results and it used tomato paste rather than your tomato sauce. I will try yours tonight. just one concern. I have only read two recipes so far and both are high in sodium. 1800. Im assuming that all the others that I will find will be the same.
Hi Claudio, it's high in sodium because of the soy sauce. Although technically you don't use all the sauce on the steak (and it only absorbs so much), we thought we should add the values as they are just so people know.
I made this steak last week and it was fabulous. Just about to make it again for the weekend!
I'm so happy I came across this recipe! My daughter is vegan and my husband is a meat eater. I'm always trying new things. This will be perfect for steak night!

I love this recipe and the name of your blog! Have a dwarf Yuzu tree out front - an amazing citrus. And this is an amazing recipe. Nice to understand each ingredient that goes into it and not buy it processed at the store.
