Our Delicious Vegan Pizza Recipe
You'll love this easy and healthy vegan pizza recipe made with wholegrain crust for added nutrition and deliciousness
I love vegan pizza because it’s super easy to make, you can mix and match the toppings and you can also freeze the pizza base to use it at a later date. We usually eat pizza at least once a week (because we are responsible adults) and recently I wanted to experiment with wholegrain pizza base.
I recommend making your pizza base well in advance. This way you can just defrost it and top it up with your favourite ingredients.
One of the most frequent questions I get asked is how can I eat pizza without cheese. Honestly, there are lots of vegan pizza toppings you can pick from. And if you really love cheese, you can always go to your local bio store and purchase some vegan mozzarella. It’s stretchy, taste delicious (you won’t believe it’s not the real deal) and it creates the perfect base for your vegan pizza toppings.
Because we try to eat mainly whole foods, we purposely avoid adding cheese to our pizza. But ever since we went plant-based, we realised pizza never tasted as delicious.
I always made my pizza with normal white flour, but ever since I discovered the power of whole grain flour, I can’t imagine making our vegan pizza any other way. The only thing to consider is that it will take a little longer for proving to be done. But worry not, you will totally get a crispy and thin crust.
So what about the vegan pizza toppings? We absolutely love Hawaiian so naturally, we add pineapple to our vegan pizza. I make the tomato sauce from scratch as well and usually add mushrooms, olives, peppers and jalapenos. Now, G doesn’t like spicy foods so I tend to put all the spices and hot chillies on my pizza alone. I love a good spicy kick, especially when mixed with the sweetness of the pineapple. It’s just so delicious.
For the tomato sauce, I buy fresh tomatoes from the market, add them to my blender, with a pinch of salt, pepper, spicy chillies and Italian herbs. I sometimes go wild and add some ground juniper for some added flavour.
I know I said I don’t add any cheese to our vegan pizza, but I do add nutritional yeast flakes which give the pizza a nutty, cheese-like flavour. It’s so delicious, I can’t believe I didn’t discover it earlier.
Love Italian food? We do too! Don't forget to check how to make Traditional Vegan Breadsticks.

- 2 tablespoon olive oil, plus extra for brushing
- 1 tsp caster sugar
Vegan Pizza Sauce
- 2 medium whole tomato
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch peppercorn
- 1 tsp chillies
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp rosemary
Vegan Pizza Toppings
- 1 pepper bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 1 cup sliced oyster mushrooms, grilled (optional)
- 4 wt. oz black olives, chopped (optional)
- 1 cup pak choi, grilled (optional)
- 1 medium Jalapeno (optional)
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp rosemary
- 2 tsp nutritional yeast
- 1 oz vegan cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup leaves basil
Instructions
- Combine the water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes or until foamy
- Combine the whole grain flour and salt in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and oil. Use your kitchen aid with a bread hook to combine the mixture. If you don't have a kitchen aid, use your hands to knead the dough. The dough is ready when it’s smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and allow to rise for at least one hour. It might not double in size but be patient with it as it will not rise as quickly as white flour.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C.
- Add all pizza sauce ingredients in a blender and mix well. Add extra seasoning to taste.
- Dust work surface with flour. Knead the dough to push the air out with your hands. Divide into four parts. Use a rolling pin to roll each part into an even circle.
- Using a spatula, add pizza sauce to the dough. Add your desired toppings and sprinkle some sea salt, pepper and herbs as you like.
- Bake in the centre of the oven for about 10-20 minutes until the base is golden and crispy. Cool, on a rack, slice and serve while hot.
